Let’s start with the basics
You can take a screenshot with your laptop, desktop computer or smartphone. A screenshot is also often referred to as a “screen grab’’ or “screen capture”.
First, you might be wondering if screenshots are limited to certain operating systems, and you will be pleased to hear that they aren’t. All operating systems such as Windows, Mac, iOS, Chrome and various additional mobile operating systems are able to take a screenshot with relative ease.
Today, we are going to cover tips on taking screenshots with the most commonly used operating systems and devices. And here they are:
Taking a screenshot on a smartphone
Android
These smartphones have built-in screenshot functionality. Simply hold in the volume and power buttons at the same time for a few seconds. The screen will flash white and save the image.
On some Androids you can press the home and power buttons at the same time or simply swipe your palm across the screen to capture the image. You can turn the palm swipe feature on or off within the advanced features in the settings section of your device.
iOS
These smartphones also have a built-in screenshot functionality. Simply hold the sleep/wake button in and press the home button once. The screenshot will be captured.
This works on all Apple models except for the iPhone X. With this model, you can hold in the side button on the right of the screen and press the volume up button on the opposite side.
Windows
These smartphones keep it simple. All you need to do is hold in the power and volume up buttons at the same time and the screenshot will be captured.
BlackBerry
These smartphones are a little different in that you must hold the volume up and volume down keys at the same time. If this fails to work, you can download an app called CaptureIT OTA (http://www.captureitota.com/) which should solve the problem. Set up is fairly self explanatory.
Taking a screenshot on a PC
Windows
The simplest way to take screenshots on a Windows PC is to use the “print screen” button. This will appear as “PrtScr” on your keyboard. Pressing this button will copy the screen contents to the clipboard. From there, you will need to paste the content in a Windows Word document or similar.
This type of screen grab will capture absolutely every detail on your screen, not just the page that you are on. By pressing Alt and PrtScr at the same time, you can take a screenshot of just the window that you have open.
There is also the option of using SnippingTool which comes loaded on all computers. Open the program and select “new snip”. Thereafter you must drag the focus area over the section you want to copy and then save the captured image to a location on your computer.
MacOS
There are two options when creating a screenshot with MacOS. The first is to capture the entire screen contents and you can do this by pressing the following keys at the same time: Command, Shift, 3. To capture only part of the screen, press Command, Shift, 4.
Linux
This OS comes with many different options to choose from. You can go to applications > accessories > take screen shot. You can also use the PrtScr button to capture the entire screen or Alt + PrtScr at the same time to capture just the active window.
Alternatively, you can use an external app to assist with taking a screenshot.
ChromeOS
This operating system is less obvious with its screenshot functionality, but it can be done! Hit the Ctrl and Windows Switcher keys at the same time and voila! The windows switcher key is in the top row and looks like a stack of windows.
To select just a section of the screen to capture, press the Ctrl, Shift and Window Switcher keys at the same time.
And that’s the basics on how to capture the moment as you wish, when you wish. The screenshot has certainly made a lot of lives easier!
